In shaping ourselves a satisfactory existence it is essential to learn the art of managing our own lives. To do this we have to define both what we want and what things interest us, as well as what doesn’t interest us and what we don’t want. This apparently simplistic differentiation is, in fact, not at all that simple. Only a small percentage of us really knows what we are interested in, if we are lucky enough to have even thought about it. The great majority of us just drifts around like a cork on the tide floating here and there according to circumstances, without our even being aware of it. To know what we want we have to think calmly and profoundly about what things really motivate us so that the conclusion we reach is based on our own experience of life. It is true that, in our youth, or at any stage of our lives, we are capable of believing that one thing or another represents our true interest. However, since the large part of our fantasy is usually a myth, running into the unexpected, as sometimes happens with love, can divert the course of our lives to completely different horizons from those originally planned or aspired to. While searching for our true interests, or reflecting on our real aspirations, all spheres of human endeavors should be investigated, since emotive or seductive feelings can be found in any of the many possibilities. It is these feelings that channel the spirit to superior levels of recognition and sensitivity. Obviously these decisions include much more than the conventional choice of a job and they can be related to emotional periods or states which, although brief, remain engraved on our souls. Astonishingly, such states can be reached through many different sorts of human gratification and can even be close to the sublime, related to the mystical, or connected with some higher artistic expression. Even if these states do not last long, they can justify our lives for us, just as the compulsion to orgasm leads to the perpetuation of the human race. In this process of introspection and analysing our experience, which we can do at any stage of our lives, we should consider the widest possible range of choices, and we will probably be surprised to find incidents emerge which give us great satisfaction. These can turn out to be an important starting point for choosing a strategy for investing our energy and our action in formulating our imagined plan for a possible future. |
