THE 9th NITI CONGRESS AND WORKSHOP



The 9th Congress and Workshop of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters was held on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th March 2011, at the Conference Hall of the Top Rank Hotels, Abuja with the theme :TRANSLATION / INTERPRETATION, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY.

The Conference was attended by language practitioners – translators, interpreters and teachers - from all over the country who acquainted themselves with the various options of the Internet as a strong tool for translation and interpretation in the 21st century.

Rising from the conference, the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters agreed on the following communique :

                                                                         FINAL COMMUNIQUE


Considering the growing importance of translation and interpretation in the West African sub-region and the need to harmonise texts designed to bring about total economic, cultural and educational integration;

Mindful of the new atmosphere of total commitment to regional integration and the requirements of standard translation for mutual comprehension of the regulatory framework for all activities in the West African sub-region;

Given the commitment of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters to proper reflection of professionalism at all meetings and conferences, particularly in Nigeria and the rest of the sub-region;

1.  The Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI) hereby calls for accelerated processing of the bill leading to a proper regulatory framework for all translation and interpretation activities in Nigeria.

2.  NITI resolves to take its rightful place among the professional bodies in Nigeria, beginning with the proposed official recognition of its existence and activities.

3.  NITI shall endeavor to make every effort, through all known sources of support, from the membership of the National Assembly, especially the House Committee on Education, to the highest levels of representation, in order to ensure prompt passage of the NITI Bill into law as soon as possible.

4.   In the light of the theme for this year’s conference, NITI urges all members to, as a matter of utmost urgency and necessity, become e-compliant in order to avail themselves of the vast possibilities offered by the Internet in the normal accomplishment of their profesional activities.
