The papers to be published include those of the 12th NITI Congress & Workshop, which incidentally is ending today.
]]><![CDATA[FIGHTING EBOLA THROUGH TRANSLATION]]>Mon, 11 Aug 2014 14:05:49 GMThttps://www.nitinigeria.com/blog/fighting-ebola-through-translationThe Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI) is collaborating with Translators without Borders (www.translatorswithoutborders.org), an international organization that works alongside major global aid organizations to provide language access for humanitarian causes. TWB are currently engaged in a project with Wikipedia to publish the urgently needed health information regarding the Ebola virus into as many African languages as possible. Since Wikipedia content can be accessed from cell phones, availability of information about the illness will help with the dissemination of useful facts.

Immediate volunteer help is needed with the translation of a short simplified article on the illness into as many Nigerian languages as possible for the ongoing Wikipedia health campaign.

The Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI), as announced by e-mail and in the pages of newspapers, held the International Translation Day on 30th September 2011, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. The theme was: Building Cultural and Linguistic Bridges. The event was well attended. Most of our invitees were there, especially the eight organisations and individuals nominated for Awards this year.

Everything went well according to the Agenda earlier publicised. Professor Tiomothy Asobele delivered the Keynote Address After the Abuja President's welcome address, resource papers were presented and speeches were made.

Eight Awards were given to deserving Nigerian and African organizations and Individuals who excelled in Translation and Interpretation. Five Awards for Excellence in Translation Promotion went to the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Parliament, the ECOWAS Court of Justice, the Nigerian Television Authority and the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; two Awards for Interpretation Excellence went to Ambassador Wisdom Baiye and Honourable Ahli Komla Bruce; and one Award for Translation Excellence went to Ms. Oyinda Daramola.

Then we all moved to the buffet table to enjoy the sumptuos luncheon, and Rice and Stew was Very Plenty, thank you. If you were not there, you missed out, but not to worry, 2012 is another date.

The International Federation of Translators (FIT), established in 1953, is the body that has been promoting the ITD as a show of solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in all countries.

The Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI), the accreditation body of language professionals in Nigeria, marks this date yearly in its own territory, Nigeria, in solidarity with its colleagues worldwide.

The ITD theme for this year is: Building Cultural and Linguistic Bridges, and NITI is marking it in a one-day event, covering conference, luncheon and Awards presentation, which is holding at the Lake Chad Hall of the International Conference Centre, Abuja, 30th September 2011.

Apart from the usual notice to all NITI members, this is to officially invite the general public to join us in celebrating this day, for it will be worth the while. Stay tuned to this site and we will let you know how it all went down, just a few more days to go. ]]><![CDATA[THE 9TH NITI CONGRESS]]>Sat, 02 Apr 2011 23:50:43 GMThttps://www.nitinigeria.com/blog/the-9th-niti-congressThe 9th Congress and Workshop of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters was held, as announced (see the notice), on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th March 2011, at the Conference Hall of the Top Rank Hotels, Abuja with the theme: TRANSLATION / INTERPRETATION, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY.

The Conference was attended by language practitioners – translators, interpreters and teachers - from all over the country who acquainted themselves with the various options of the Internet as a strong tool for translation and interpretation in the 21st century.

]]><![CDATA[NITI EXAM POSTPONED]]>Thu, 15 Apr 2010 13:00:35 GMThttps://www.nitinigeria.com/blog/niti-exam-postponedTomorrow, Friday, 16th April 2010, a NITI Notice will appear in The Punch newspaper to the effect that the examination that was to hold today to test the ability of would-be new members to do quality translations has again been shifted.

That newspaper notice will announce that Applications can still be done online till 30th April, while the examination will now hold on 20th May 2010.

At the end of the first deadline given, applications had been received in as many as six languages (in order of registration): French, Hausa, Yoruba, Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese, fron candidates in Nigeria and abroad.

But we received requests from prospective candidates, mostly from Nigerians in the Diaspora, to extend the date to enable them apply for the exam. That is the reason for this second extension given, at the end of which the exam will definitely hold. ]]><![CDATA[THE NITI 2010 ADMISSION EXAMINATION]]>Mon, 15 Mar 2010 12:21:59 GMThttps://www.nitinigeria.com/blog/post-title-click-and-type-to-edit2NITI is preparing to conduct the 2010 examinations that will admit new members into our fold. Notices to this effect appeared on page 11 of This Day newspaper of February 24, on page 9 of This Day newspaper of February 25 and on page 71 of The Punch newspaper of Wednesday March 10, 2010.

Many candidates have applied for the exam and examiners are ready to go. The date of the examination is APRIL 15, 2010. Time is 12.00 noon. Mode of the examination is ONLINE; this way all the candidates can participate from anywhere in Nigeria and abroad. 

All NITI members are urged to reach our to any prospective language professionals in their vicinity to let them know about these activities so that they can take the advantage and join the Institute.

All this is in fulfilment of the first meeting NITI held in 2010, where it was decided to actualize the decisions of the last meeting of 2009, which fixed the examination. The language experts who will be official examiners will be announced shortly with other details of the process.

The public Hearing of the Draft Bill of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (NITI), which has been at the National Assembly for passage into Law, was held on 17th November 2009. A strong NITI Bill Defense Team was at the occasion and successfully defended our Bill against all vicissitudes. The team comprised Chief Union Edebiri, NITI Legal Adviser, Prof. Ekundayo Simpson, immediate NITI past President and Ex-Oficio Committee member, Prof. Tundonu Amosu, NITI National President, Mr. Wole Ajiboso, NITI National Treasurer and Mr. Joachim Okeke, NITI National Secretary.Three powerful defence presentations were made, first by Prof. Amosu, who laid a concrete defense foundation with his introductory speech; Prof. Edebiri next consolidated the edifice with his legally fortified defense memo, then Prof. Simpson laid on the cupola on the edifice with his protective and finishing presentation, which was based on his keynote address at the 2005 International Translation Day celebration. All three presentations sought to convince the Honourable members of the Committee to convince the National Assembly to pass our Draft Bill into Law.

Honourable Farouk Lawan, Chairman of the House Committee on Education, presided over the Hearing, which started at 11 a. m. He agreed with the need to regulate the profession of translation and interpretation in Nigeria in order to separate the wheat from the chaff and keep the profession in its high and dignified position. He recalled a public event where the service of a sign language interpreter was hired because some deaf people were in attendance. Nobody in the audience suspected any foul play on the part of the sign language ‘expert' who was throwing his hands up and down like a choir master until the deaf people at the event protested the antics of the sign language clown. It turned out that the language ‘expert' knew nothing of sign language and had to be removed from the event.

The Honourable members of the Committee, who had read the Draft Bill, then threw a number of questions at NITI, seeking answers and clarifications: 
  • What is the relationship between the Nigerian professional who goes abroad to translate and interprete, say, with a government delegation, and a foreigner who comes to Nigeria to do the same thing?
  • Will all those religious interpreters in mosques and churches be certified by NITI before they can practice what they have been practicing?
  • How does NITI intend to check professional mischief by bad eggs, who exist in all professions?
  • Since this profession has an international outlook, who are the members? Are there going to be some form of entrance examinations?
  • Some interpreters have no formal training but have gained experience through practice. How are these people going to be regulated?
  • How does the NITI compulsory registration of language practitioners reconcile with the Nigerian Constitutional clause which guarantees freedom of association?
  • How about those Islamic interpreters of the Koran, how will NITI treat them?
The NITI Bill Defense Team faced these questions squarely and gave satisfactory answers and clarifications. The Honourable Chairman thanked NITI for the presentations and promised to take our Bill to the full House of Assembly Hearing for further action.

The National Secretary gave the vote of thanks to the Honourable House for Hearing us out and promising to take further action. Proceedings were adjourned at 12.40 in the afternoon. The Chairman offered NITI refreshment, snacks and lunch. It was indeed a memorable day.-------------------------------------

Ladies and Gentlemen of the NITI fold, when a Draft Bill journeys through a Legislative House up to this stage, that Bill is usually as good as passed. Therefore, get ready to become a Chartered Translator and Interpreter as soon as our Bill is passed into Law, and that comes with greater demands of responsibility and professionalism. NITI is embarking on a nationwide registration of translators and interpreters who are not yet in our register. So please pass on the word to any language professionals around you to take this Professional Body serious now - register and pay your dues - because NITI is about to start functioning like the ICAN, NMA, NBA, NSE and professional bodies like that.
